Pennsylvania DAR Supports Education
Students and Teachers!

Chapters from all corners of Pennsylvania support students and educators through many programs. Reach out to a local chapter to learn more!

American History Essay Contests

Chapters sponsor student essay contests available to students in grades 5-12 through the American History Committee. Chapter winners are selected from each of the grades in grades 5-8 and one winner from grades 9-12 to advance to the state level. State winners from each grade level will advance to the divisional level. Divisional winners will advance to the national level where the winners are announced. National winners will receive a certificate, medal, and monetary reward.

Topics vary annually, and examples of past topics include the voyage of the Mayflower, the 19th Amendment, and the history of national parks in the United States.

Teacher Lesson Plans & Classroom Grants

Through our Educational Resources Committee, DAR chapters and members from around the country have developed original lesson plans for K-12 educators. Any educator may find these lesson plans on the National Society's website where updates are posted monthly.

Junior Members of our society, those aged 18-35, fundraise for many important education programs across the country. One of the biggest is the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund Classroom Grant program. Each chapter may submit a nominee each year through the Pennsylvania Junior Membership Committee. Contact a local chapter to learn more about this funding opportunity. Applications are typically available in the early spring.

DAR Good Citizen Award & Scholarship Contest

The DAR Good Citizen Award encourages and rewards the qualities of good citizenship. One high school senior at each accredited schools may be selected by their teachers and peers for possessing good citizenship qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, schools and communities. The top chapter winners are submitted to the state competition where one male and one female winner are selected to proceed to the division and national scholarship competitions. School officials may contact a local chapter for more information on how to participate in this annual contest.
